The Marquis Group

Founded by Douglas Hickok in 1992, The Marquis Group has grown into a full service multifamily operating company that owns over 3,500 units across Texas, Oklahoma, and Florida. The Marquis Group has its own in-house Acquisitions team, Development team, and Property Management company that have helped grow the portfolio. The Multi-Family Housing portfolio consists of Student, Conventional, and HUD (Project-based Section 8 with Housing Assistance Payment Contracts) rental housing.

Our Team

Doug Hickok

Managing Partner – President

Doug formed the Marquis Group in 1992 as a full service multifamily operating company. As President, Doug serves as general partner for limited partnerships that acquire multi-family properties. He also serves as a limited partner and invests personal money in office, retail, land, restaurants, and other real estate investments.

Doug graduated from the University of Texas in 1978 with degrees in Accounting and Finance. After graduation, he joined the Dallas real estate office of New York based Citibank as an account lending officer. Doug handled a loan portfolio in excess of $300 million and was responsible for national clients including Lincoln Property Company, Trammel Crow Company, Paragon Group, and others. In 1985 Doug was hired by Hampton Capital Group as an investment officer. Eventually he and a partner formed their own real estate investment firm, Hampton Partners, Inc. in which they focused on acquiring undervalued real estate from local financial institutions.

Morgan Cox

Partner

Morgan Cox joined Marquis Group as a partner in 2003 after moving from East Tennessee where he was Founder & CEO of AVANT – Advanced Commercial Strategies, a regional leader in real estate services for the retail industry.  Shortly after arriving to Marquis, Cox led the acquisition of Tall Timbers Apartments, a 148 unit Project Based Section 8 asset located in Conroe, Texas which proved to be a very successful investment and launched Cox’s career into the Affordable Housing Industry.  Morgan and his team have acquired and manage a portfolio of 2,500 units located throughout Texas, Florida and Oklahoma.    In addition, Cox leads the team of professionals in the Compliance Division at Marquis which have maintained a pristine reputation within the Industry.  Marquis is deeply committed to the preservation of the affordable housing inventory throughout the country.

Morgan is passionate about the protection of affordable housing for low-income families and sits on the Board of Directors of the National Leased Housing Association – the leading advocacy group for project owners and administrators of Project-Based Section 8 Housing. 

Carter Hickok

Vice President of Acquisitions/Asset Management

Carter joined the Marquis Group team in 2016. He is the Asset Manager on the Student Housing portfolio located adjacent to The University of Texas. He also focuses his time on acquisitions and portfolio management.

Prior to joining the Marquis Group, Carter worked for three years as an analyst and associate at Hudson Advisors/Lone Star Funds on the company’s Asset Management team. Carter graduated from the University of Texas in 2013 with a B.A. in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Urban Studies and Urban Development.

Waldemar Maya

Partner

Mr. Maya is directly responsible for Marquis Development, Inc. and Condo Marketing, Inc.   Prior to joining Marquis, Mr. Maya was the division Chief Financial Officer for Boeing Airplane Services, a 4.2 billion dollar enterprise that encompasses the world’s largest logistics network and all after-market support to the airline industry.  Earlier in Mr. Maya’s career he was Chief Financial Officer to the Blount Companies where he built, integrated, and initiated the financial reporting, financing and management of six different companies that encompassed real estate brokerage and development, including land infrastructure, shopping centers, multi-family housing, housing, and numerous different real estate joint ventures.

Brent Halvorson

Vice President of Acquisitions

Brent joined the Marquis Group team in 2013 as Vice President of Acquisitions with the main focus of upgrading the Marquis Group Multifamily portfolio and adding additional assets. In addition to Acquisitions, he also focuses his time on Condominium conversion opportunities and Asset management. Prior to joining the Marquis Group, Brent was a member of the PGA of America and worked for ClubCorp in the Golf and Country Club Business where he was the Director of Golf at Gleneagles Country Club as well as North Texas Regional Director of Golf Revenue. Brent graduated from the University of North Texas in 1992 with a B.A. in Communication Studies.
